Task #5 What I like best in my town essay
Madrid is my hometown, I lived there for almost forty years.
My clearest memory is walking through the city center at Christmas time.
From Plaza del Callao to Puerta del Sol, all those streets are full of
life and on these days, they are especially pretty.
When I was a kid, I remember going down Preciados by the hand of my
parents and brothers. I walked while looking astonished at the Christmas lights and smelling
the chestnuts roasted at the street stalls. And, of course, I remember the first time I saw CORTYLANDIA: the greatest Christmas show at the back of El Corte Inglés main building.
Years later, I
discovered mythical places quite close, such as La Metralleta. I get there with my middle brother looking for Christmas presents. In this record shop,
you could find any vinyl you wanted. This is how I met Leño, Sex Pistols, and
all these kinds of groups that my parents did not really like.
When I met my wife (on those days my future girlfriend), we usually went to
this area to spend the day walking, browsing all the shops, having a “tajada de
bacalao” at Casa Labra, dozens of “churros” at San Ginés, or several “Napolitanas”
at La Mallorquina, enjoying the lights and the Christmas mood.
Even nowadays, we spend there the last evening of the year, having a walk
and enjoying the last performance of CORTYLANDIA before going back home to celebrate
New Year’s Eve.
Yes, this is what I like best in Madrid.
